With the launching of the eMentoring program, the Wo Learning Champions step into the cyber century. The journey into online mentoring began with a training session, conducted at Honolulu CC on September 19, 2003, for 24 of the 42 eMentors who were able to attend. On hand to assist the eMentors in reflecting on communication styles and strategies for working with colleagues was Dr. Lyla Berg, The eMentors also heard about some specific strategies for successful mentoring Finally, the faculty and staff discussed responses to four email scenarios.
The training session provided an important opportunity for the eMentors and Wo Learning Champions to discuss issues and strategies relevant to the eMentoring program and also to get to know each other a little better, sharing food and stories before and after the training session.
So, was it worth it? The evaluations from the training session indicate a unanimous positive response to the information and the discussion about eMentoring. But the real proof of the value of the training comes from one of the participants, who sent me this comment via email right after the training session:
I spent Friday night and most of Saturday with my mentee. A couple of the very case situations came up: how to handle an unruly student and how to focus her time in this first year. I felt well prepared to offer a variety of suggestions.
